Jewellery, Metals & Gemstones
Our jewelry is predominantly crafted from sterling silver and gold. Each of these metals has its unique properties, characteristics, and care requirements.
Sterling Silver:
We use nickel-free sterling silver for our silver jewelry and components. Sterling silver is an alloyed metal composed of at least 92.5% pure silver, with the remaining 7.5% consisting of a mixture of zinc and copper. This combination of metals enhances the strength and durability of sterling silver, making it suitable for everyday wear. It's important to note that fine silver, which is 99.9% pure silver, is not commonly used for jewelry due to its softness and susceptibility to damage.
Gold:
Gold has been a popular metal for jewelry for centuries, prized for its durability, luster, and resistance to corrosion, tarnish, and rust. It is malleable and well-suited for intricate designs. The purity of gold is measured in carats (or karats in the US), with 24 carats representing pure gold. The carat system indicates the percentage of gold in an alloy, with the rest being other metals like copper and silver.
Different carat values represent different levels of gold purity:
• 24ct = 100% pure gold
• 22ct = 91.6% pure gold
• 18ct = 75.0% pure gold
• 14ct = 58.5% pure gold
• 9ct = 37.5% pure gold
Most gold jewelry is stamped with a fineness mark that indicates its carat value (e.g., 375 for 9ct, 585 for 14ct, 750 for 18ct, etc.).
It's important to understand the properties and care requirements of each metal to ensure your jewelry retains its beauty and quality over time. If you have any questions or concerns about caring for your jewelry, feel free to reach out to us at any time.
Silver jewelry can sometimes develop a blackened or tarnished appearance due to a process called oxidation. This occurs when the metal comes into contact with hydrogen sulfide (sulfur), a substance present in the air. The oxidation of silver can happen more quickly in environments with high humidity and exposure to light, particularly in tropical climates.
Certain personal care products such as cosmetics, body lotion, perfume, deodorant, and hair spray can accelerate the process of oxidation when they come into contact with silver jewelry.
It's important to note that the occurrence of oxidation does not indicate that the jewelry is not made of real silver. In fact, all noble metals, including silver, have their own unique ways of interacting with the environment and developing a patina over time. While some people prefer the aged look that oxidation can bring to silver jewelry, others may prefer to maintain the original shine and luster of the metal. Remember that a certain level of oxidation is a natural characteristic of silver and can enhance its unique appearance. If you have any questions about caring for your silver jewelry or dealing with oxidation, feel free to reach out to us for guidance and advice.

To clean your jewelry at home, follow these steps:
1. Prepare a Cleaning Solution: Fill a bowl with warm water and add a small amount of mild dish soap. Mix the solution gently to create a soapy mixture.
2. Use a Soft Toothbrush: Take a soft toothbrush and dip it into the soapy water. Gently brush around and under any gemstones and their settings. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, especially on delicate pieces.
3. Rinse Thoroughly: After brushing, rinse the jewelry under hot water to remove any soap residue. Make sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid leaving any soap behind.
4. Air Dry: Place the cleaned jewelry on a clean cloth or towel to air dry. Avoid using paper towels, as they can scratch the metal.
To further maintain your jewelry's condition:
5. Store Separately: Prevent jewelry pieces from rubbing against each other by storing them separately. Use the Olive Yu pouch or box provided to protect your items from scratches and friction.
6. Protect from Sunlight: Store your jewelry in a safe, cool, and dry environment away from direct sunlight. Sunlight and heat can cause metals and gemstones to fade or discolor over time.
7. Prevent Bending: Take extra care with delicate items such as thin rings and earrings. Sterling silver is relatively soft, so it's important to store these pieces where they won't get bent, dented, or scratched.
By following these care instructions, you can keep your jewelry looking its best and maintain its longevity. If you have specific questions about caring for a particular piece of jewelry or need further guidance, feel free to reach out to us. We're here to help you enjoy your jewelry for years to come!
Both Gold and Sterling silver is indeed considered hypoallergenic for most people, as it is generally well-tolerated by individuals with sensitive skin. However, it's worth noting that while sterling silver itself is hypoallergenic, some people might experience skin reactions due to various factors such as sweat, dirt, or other substances that can accumulate on the jewelry. Regular cleaning, as mentioned earlier, can help minimize these reactions.
On the other hand, brass contains copper, and copper allergies are not uncommon. While brass jewelry is often coated with a protective layer to minimize skin contact with the metal, some individuals may still experience a skin reaction if they have a sensitivity or allergy to copper. It's important to be aware of your body's reaction and take appropriate precautions.
If you notice any skin irritation or unusual reaction while wearing jewelry, it's a good idea to remove the jewelry and clean the affected area thoroughly. If the issue persists or worsens, you may want to consult a dermatologist or medical professional to determine the cause of the reaction and receive appropriate advice.
As always, maintaining proper hygiene, cleaning your jewelry regularly, and being mindful of any known allergies or sensitivities can help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable jewelry-wearing experience.

The time required for each custom design can vary depending on several factors. Here are some general guidelines for the timeframes involved in different stages of the custom design process:
1. Design & Gem Sourcing:
For customizations of our existing jewelery collection pieces or relatively simple designs, the design and gem sourcing stage could take around 1-2 weeks. This involves refining the design, selecting suitable gemstones, and ensuring all details align with your vision.
2. Crafting:
The crafting stage can vary based on the complexity of the design, the rarity of the gemstones, and the intricacy of the craftsmanship. On average, crafting a custom piece could take anywhere from 1-3 weeks. Simple designs typically require less time, while more intricate and complex designs may take longer.
It's important to note that each custom design is unique, and the timeframe can be influenced by factors such as the number of revisions needed, the availability of specific gemstones, and the level of intricacy in the design. To get a more accurate estimate of the time required for your specific custom design, we recommend reaching out to us with your ideas and preferences. This will allow us to provide you with a more personalized timeframe based on your vision.
Feel free to contact us at hello@oliveyu.com to discuss your custom design idea, and we'll be more than happy to provide you with a better understanding of the time it might take to bring your unique piece to life.
When it comes to creating custom pieces using gemstones provided by customers, we approach each order on a case-by-case basis. While we understand the desire to incorporate personal gemstones into your custom design, there are certain risks associated with working with external gemstones that have not been sourced by us.
During the gem setting process, there is a potential risk of breaking or cracking the gemstone, especially if the gemstone has undergone treatments or heating processes. When we work with gemstones from customers, we may not have complete information about the specific treatments or history of the stone. As a result, there is an increased risk of cracking when heat is applied during the setting process.
While instances of gemstones breaking are not common, it's a consideration that we must take seriously. In the rare cases where we do accept customer gemstones for a custom piece, we want to emphasize that we cannot assume liability for any potential damage that may occur during the setting process.
If you're interested in incorporating your own gemstones into a custom design, please reach out to us at hello@oliveyu.com to discuss the specifics of your gemstones and design ideas. We'll be happy to provide guidance and insights on the feasibility and potential risks associated with using external gemstones in your custom piece.
We respect and value the uniqueness of each custom piece we create for our customers. While we retain the rights to the designs we create, we have a strict policy against replicating custom pieces for other customers. Your custom design is a one-of-a-kind creation tailored to your preferences, and we are committed to maintaining the exclusivity and individuality of each customer's design. Your trust and satisfaction are our top priorities, and we want to ensure that your custom piece remains special and unique to you.
Certainly! We're delighted to offer customisation options for any of our jewellery collection pieces to suit your preferences. However, please note that we adhere to ethical standards and will not replicate another designer's intellectual property. If you have designs from other sources that you'd like to use as inspiration, please feel free to share them with us. We can draw inspiration from those designs to create a unique piece tailored to your style and preferences. Our goal is to craft exquisite bespoke jewelry that reflects your individuality and taste.
